I was hoping that this little movie review section could have Dave and I debating on movies that we have different opinons of. That will have to wait because I couldn't agree more with Dave on this movie. Piece of crap. I hate to say it, because I adore Kevin Spacey, almost to the point of obsession...dangerous...deep...obses...nevermind. I hate to diss a movie of his - but WHAT WAS HE THINKING??
Let me say first, that this movie is not all bad. The acting is superb. Haley Joel Osment proves that his talented work in The Sixth Sense was no fluke (as Dave said) and that he should have kicked Michael Cain's ass and won that Oscar. I want to know who voted for Mr. Caine anyways. But that's a whole 'nother ball of wax. The first hour or so of the movie was very pleasant and I really enjoyed myself. There were moments where I laughed out loud, several in fact.
But then came that terrible ending. That offense to intelligent thought. The old "hey, we can't have a happy ending - that's so 1980's - and I can't think of anything good, so let's kill the little kid" ending. For reference see American History X. The ending was contrived and I'm so mad at myself for actually crying - what a wimp I am.
Like Dave, I felt angry leaving the theater. The only movie that I felt angrier about was Eyes Wide Shut. I felt cheated and I was so disappointed that I kept apologizing to Dave for making him see the movie with me.
Bottom line - Great acting, crappy plot. 2 stars (out of 5).
